How to Buy Genuine Electronics in Ghana Without Getting Burned

Avicenna Commerce June 29, 2026 3 min read

Ghana's electronics market is full of options at every price point, but not all of them are what they claim to be. Counterfeit products, refurbished items sold as new, and devices with falsely inflated specifications are unfortunately common. This guide gives you the knowledge to protect yourself every time you buy.

The Most Common Traps to Avoid

Fake Products Sold as Genuine

Counterfeit smartphones, earphones, chargers, and power banks are widely available in Ghanaian markets. They often look identical to the real thing at a glance but use inferior components that fail quickly and, in some cases, can be dangerous. A phone that heats up excessively or a charger that sparks is often a counterfeit.

Refurbished Items Sold as Brand New

A refurbished product is one that has been used, returned, or repaired and then re-packaged to look new. This is not always dishonest, but it becomes a problem when it is not disclosed. Signs of a refurbished item include scratches under the battery cover, a battery that drains unusually fast for a new device, or a serial number that does not match the box.

Grade B or "UK Used" Items

"UK used" or "Grade B" electronics are second-hand products imported from abroad. They can represent good value if you know what you are buying and pay an appropriate price. The problem arises when they are sold as new at full price.

How to Verify a Product Before Buying

Check the Serial Number

Every genuine electronic device has a unique serial number. For smartphones, dial *#06# to display the IMEI number and compare it to what is printed on the box and inside the battery compartment. If any of these do not match, do not buy the product.

For Samsung phones, you can visit Samsung's official website and enter the serial number to verify the device's authenticity and warranty status.

Inspect the Packaging

Genuine products from reputable brands have consistent, high-quality packaging. Look for crisp printing, correct spelling, and a seal that has not been opened and re-sealed. Loose plastic, uneven fonts, or missing accessories are all warning signs.

Ask for a Warranty Document

A genuine product sold through an authorised channel will come with a warranty document that includes the seller's details, the product's serial number, and the warranty period. If a seller refuses to provide this or claims "the warranty is the receipt," be cautious.

Test Before You Accept

Whether buying online or in person, always test the product before you accept delivery. For phones, check that all buttons, the camera, the speaker, the charging port, and the SIM tray work correctly. For laptops, check the battery, ports, keyboard, and screen for any dead pixels or unusual behaviour.

Where to Buy Safely in Ghana

The safest way to buy electronics in Ghana is through a verified online retailer or an authorised brand dealer. Look for sellers who:

  • Display a physical address and contact number
  • Have genuine customer reviews that mention specific product details
  • Offer a clear returns policy
  • Provide a warranty document at point of sale
  • Are willing to let you test the product before finalising the purchase
